Forks Township 2010 Capital Budget

I have been reading a lot of opinions about the Forks Township capital budget.  Last week, I got a chance to attend the 2010 Capital Budget Work Session number one.   Here is my understanding of the proposed 2010 capital budget.

  • 2008 Actuals: $268,245
  • 2009 Budget: $670,000
  • 2009 Projected Actuals: $409,500

The Township has the opportunity to under run the 2009 capital budget by 41%.  I am very supportive of limiting our capital spending in these tough economic times.

Update 1: The  2010 proposed budget is $416,500.   The 2010 proposed capital budget represents a  1.7% increase over the 2009 projected actual's ($409,500) and 37.83% decrease from the 2009 budget ($670,000).

Can you provide some additional information as to why the capital spending is coming in approximately 41% under? One would assume that the projects that have either come in under budget or have been delayed, deferred, or discontinued would have been identified. Just because expenses are coming in under budget for a current year does not in and of iteslf indicate fiscal responsibility. In fact, if the underrun is due to deferring certain renovations or replacements that could occur this year at a given cost, which may cost substantially more in the future, that could indicate lack of forsight, and fiscal irresponsibility.

Please clarify the information you have put fourth.

I see that you added additional information to your original post after my inquiry for additional information. However, the information you did add to your original blog post was merely identifying the 2010 budget information.
For someone who keeps pushing being an advocate for open government, your lack of clarity on the topics makes one think you are going to do nothing different if actually elected. My reason for asking questions on your blog, is that I do believe some of your ideas might be good ideas to consider. You are also the only candidate who has been using such a public forum for conveying your positions, which in itself can be great, but can also be damning. Although there aren't any other candidates who have been so vocally pushing their ideas, the fact that you have been, without clarity, is discouraging.
I again will ask that you provide clarity on your positions, to include WHY you think your positions are the best. I am not asking in an attempt to bash, or damage your reputation, yet I consider myself a very realistic person, who happens to take a genuine interest in government, and is also more interested in what candidate will do what I believe will be the best for the area responsible as a whole. Having said that, I do not vote along party lines. I want to know what candidates positions are, and why, and I am also open to discussion and convincing on topics. If you honestly believe a certain position on a topic to be the best, please spare us the "I support this" position, as it is meaningless. Please state why. THAT is clarity.
I still have not decided who I am going to vote for in the upcoming election, and I am asking you to convince me that you are the best candidate for one of the Supervisor positions. To do this, please provide the clarity I ask. Without, I will actually spread the word throughout the township, identifying both your lack of clarity on the positions, which is also contradictory on your stance on openness, and your refusal to provide clarity when asked.
Thank you.
